Text Box: Alpacas are members of the Camelid family and are related to llamas. Alpacas are smaller than llamas, standing about 36” at the withers and weighing from 100 to 175 pounds. Alpaca fiber is similar to llama without the guard hairs. It is more lustrous and stronger than sheep’s wool and softer than cashmere or angora. Alpaca fiber is strong and it has microscopic air pockets which creates a lightweight garment with great insulation value. Many people who cannot wear wool find alpaca more pleasant to wear due to the non-allergenic quality of the fiber. Alpaca garments are sought after for their warmth, softness, and beauty. Alpaca fiber can be in found in a range of 22 distinct colors. It can easily be dyed any color. Alpacas are sheared annually and will yield an average of five pounds of fleece from a female and eight or more pounds from a male, enough to make four to eight sweaters. Cria (baby alpaca) fiber is extra fine and is sought after by spinners and fiber artists. These beautiful animals originated in the mountains of South America. In 1984 Alpacas were imported to the United States from Chile, then later from Peru and Bolivia. Currently, one can find alpacas living on farms throughout USA. Alpacas are cool weather animals and prefer the northern climate.
